The Game

Across the Universe is a freeform roleplaying game set at the Sci Fi convention called Convergence 64 at a hotel in Retford. The convention has 4 strands, Hard SF, Psy-Fy, Science/Steampunk and invasion/conspiracies.  These strands are mirrored in the interests and expectations of the attendees at the convention and also in the source material which inspired the characters.  The characters in the game are a wide mix of individuals from across the convention strands plus a few more down to earth characters.

Basic Information

Number of players: 64

Setting: Retford, England, 17th, 18th and 19th February 2017

Time to run: Weekend (Friday Night, Saturday, Sunday Morning)

Space Requirements: Very Large room, Large Room and Two Medium Rooms

Authors: Fiona Lloyd, David Brain and Charlie Paull

With additional material by: Jon Crew, Martin Jones, Alan Paull, Traci Whitehead, Emma O'Connell and Tym Norris.

At the convention you will have a chance to try out The Culture’s karaoke machine on the second floor, or take part in a Better Than Life adventure.  Visit the bar or try your luck with an entry in the Robot Wars competition.

As you approach down the drive of the hotel, you notice a number of different vehicles in the car park.  Some of them have been very cleverly made to look quite fanciful.  Obviously copies of vehicles from many of the shows you will have seen and books you’ve read.  The large space ship apparently merged through the fabric of the hotel is a piece of set-dressing genius.

However, this may not turn out to be your ordinary down to earth convention.  If the opportunity arises to fly space ships or move through time, do 6 impossible things before breakfast or save the world in less then 3 ½ minutes, that would not be any of the con committee’s doing and we do not accept responsibility.

During the game, you will get a chance to interest yourself in the meaning of identity.  We all ask ourselves questions about the meaning of life.  What is it to be real, to be alive, to be human?  Where do I fit in life, the universe and everything?  Do other people see me as I see myself?  Do I want others to see me differently as the game of life progresses?

Who am I ... no, really?  Am I happy about that?   You will have to decide.  What is the answer?

This is not an occult or Chthulu game.  It is also not a superhero game.
